Dear Maya,
When I first held you in my arms and looked into your eyes, neither of us could imagine how much you would accomplish. But I always knew that you were special and that there was something unique and amazing about you. You were born with a gift – and it was my job as your mother to nurture and support the development of that gift.
You have achieved so much during your lifetime – writing, speaking and working diligently as a civil rights activist. I am so proud of all that you have become and all that you have done. You have inspired so many people and have left a legacy that will live on forever.
I know that the path you have taken wasn’t always easy – you have had to overcome a lot of adversity and heartache. But you have used your experiences to become stronger, wiser and more compassionate. You have taken those difficult times and used them to make the world a better place.
Your strength and resilience have been an example for so many people. You have used your words to change hearts and minds, to inspire generations of people to come and to fight for what is right. I am so proud of you for being brave, for standing up and speaking out when it wasn’t popular.
You may wonder why I am writing you this letter. The truth is that I want you to be reminded of how special you are and how much you have achieved. I want you to know that while you were growing up, I was always in awe of you and the woman you were becoming. You are an exemplary person and everything that I dreamed of and hoped that you would be.
No matter what happens, never forget how much I love you. You are my everything. I am so lucky to not only be your mother, but also your best friend.
Hardships Faced
Your life has been far from easy and I can only imagine the difficulties that you have faced. From a young age, you had to face racism and prejudice and deal with the circumstances of a difficult family life. On top of that, life threw you a few curve balls – illness, death and other challenges.
But you never gave up. You embraced your challenges and used them in your writing and art. You taught yourself to read, you wrote your first book at the age of 14 and you went on to become one of the most prolific authors of your day.
Your determination has been inspiring and I hope that you will continue to remember that even the hardest of times can be overcome with persistence and courage. As you face and tackle each challenge, remember to be gracious, humble and wise. Your strength and resilience will guide you and help you to persevere.
Although you may have faced hardships, I hope that you will never forget how incredible you are. You are a strong person, capable of overcoming anything that life throws your way.
I will be eternally proud of the strong and vibrant woman that you have become.
Advice for the Future
As you transition into new adventures, I want to give you some pieces of advice. Don’t be scared to take risks, but be sure to always stay true to yourself. Pay attention to what your heart and intuition are telling you, as this will guide you to make the best decisions.
Be unapologetic about your beliefs and values and never give up on fighting for them. Remember to question the status quo and stand up for yourself and others. Don’t be afraid to speak your truth and trust that your voice will make a difference.
Though it’s important to stay true to what you believe, never forget that everyone has the right to their own opinion. Don’t be afraid to respectfully disagree with others or debate ideas – but make sure not to become too entrenched in your convictions.
Follow your passions and take advantage of opportunities that come your way. Life is short so never be afraid to reach for the stars and make your dreams reality. Always remember that with enough hard work and effort, anything is possible.
Most importantly, never forget that you are an incredible person – an example of strength, courage and resilience. Never forget your roots and everything that had to happen to make you who you are today.
My Love For You
You have had to face a lot of difficulties in your life, but despite this, you have become an incredibly strong person. Remember how much I love you and how proud I am of everything you have achieved.
No matter how tough life gets, never forget that I have been here every step of the way. You have taught me so many things and have been my pillar of strength during tough times. I am so blessed to have been given you as my daughter.
