A Letter To My Daughter Maya Angelou Pdf

Dear Maya,

I can hardly believe it’s been so long since we’ve seen each other – so much has changed since then! I still remember the first time I met you; you were this tiny, adorable bundle with such a strong personality that I immediately fell in love with you. You have grown into an amazing young woman and it fills me with pride and love to think that I have been given the privilege to witness your transformation.

This letter is prompted by a need to share with you the things that I wish I could have told you in person. Life has a way of moving us away from one another and I regret that I have not been able to be more present in your life. There are no words to express the depth of my pride and admiration for all you have accomplished, and my sorrow for any pain I have been part of during our journey together.

I want you to know that, above anything else, I want you to live a life true to your values and ideals. To be courageous and steadfast in your convictions and beliefs. To be brave enough to challenge the status quo and to be willing to take risks, even if it means facing failure. To know that striving for excellence is never wasted, and that any success you achieve is not by any measure earned alone, rather it belongs to a support system of family, friends, and mentors.

I could go on for days, but all I will say is that the most important thing I have to tell you is that I love you. It is something that I keep in my heart – an uncomplicated, infinite love that moves me to wish that you pursue your dreams, even when it may be difficult. I am here to support you, no matter what you decide to do.

Family

It’s important to remember that family means more than simply being related by blood. It’s made up of those who walk with you through the struggles and successes you’ll experience in life. It’s the people who will be there for you in the rain or shine. It’s the unconditional love and support that can only truly be shared with those you extend family beyond the traditional boundaries.

I want to encourage you to cultivate relationships with those from other backgrounds, ethnicities, and cultures. There’s so much to learn and benefit from these extended family members, as well as offer – work together to combat any hate and strive for a better future for us all.

Maintaining a healthy distance from those who could disturb your peace should not be overlooked either. People who bring negative energy and self-destructive habits can take away from what is important and necessary to sustain a happy and balanced life. Prioritise your physical, mental, and emotional well-being and those relationships that bring more joy and strength to your days.

Remember the power of love – it bridges any distance and is strong enough to resist against any force. Keep all your relationships, especially those with members of your family, rooted in love.

Self Discovery

Your journey in life should also be rooted in self-discovery. Take the time to explore who you are and all the wonderful gifts you have to offer. There is no one else in the world like you and the world needs your energy. As the famous author Maya Angelou said, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style.”

Leave worries of what other people may think and just be yourself – laugh the loudest and don’t be afraid to shed a tear. Tap into your inner strength and use it to lead your journey, not someone else’s ideas or expectations of you. Remember it is ok to not know, to take chances and make mistakes. There is something special about living openly and authentically and how powerful it feels to fiercely accept yourself as you were created naturally.

Take the time to explore, be comfortable with your own skin, and connect with yourself and the universe. You will surprise yourself with each passing day and all the amazing things you are capable of when you decide to live and embrace your truth.

Education

Education has the power to shape your future – it illuminates a world of possibilities and prepares us for the complexities of life. And even though the path you choose may sometimes feel counterintuitive and uncomfortable, have trust in the process and try your best not to compare yourself with others. Respect other’s route and never allow anyone to undermine the beauty of your individual journey.

No matter what your age, strive to learn something new each day, whether it be a new language, an understanding of the world, or a skill set. Surround yourself with books, podcasts, and knowledgeable people and embrace their knowledge rather than relying on blind faith. Don’t allow yourself to be a passive observer, instead search for the deeper why and nurture your focus and desire for knowledge.

And don’t forget the power of listening. To really understand what is being said, go beyond the surface and listen with intent to connnect with the heart of the matter. Everyone has different experiences and by truly listening, you can understand and respect the differences of opinion.

Values

As you grow, never forget what is truly important to you. It is easy to get lost in the world and allow others to shape your values. Take time to develop your own and be comfortable challenging the status quo with poise – find out what works best for you and stick with it.

Identify what sets your heart on fire and be passionate about your dreams, nurture them and never compromise who you truly are. Learn to be resilient and be prepared to tackle any obstacle in your way. And embrace failure, nothing distracts you from the path more than fear.

Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your dreams, applaud your successes and pick you up when you stumble. Although times can be difficult, remember that you are never truly alone and to always draw from the strength that comes from loving family and friends.

Motherhood

If you’re fortunate to become a mother, know that even in this most unconditional of relationships, you will feel at times overwhelmed and exhausted. Rear children with empathy and love, practice patience and share with them the importance of respecting emotions of others. Although it may be difficult in the moment, these moments become golden memories when the dust has settled. Cherish the laughter, the tears, and the moments of growth.

If it is hard to be a model of patience and strength, take a step back and remember the importance of self-care. Regular time taking just for yourself is essential to staying grounded and connected. It’s also important so that you will have the strength to step up when those you are raising need you. Remember I am always here to listen and to remind you that you are never alone in anything you do.

I can’t reach over the miles and give you a hug, but I can send you my love and this letter with all which it contains as a reminder of how proud I am of you and how much I love you.
